I Might Have Dreamt It, But I Think Quentin Tarantino Will Be On Today’s Show
One of the great things about the show was that when one of us did something odd, weird or stupid Mark and Brian had the talent to make lemonade out of lemons. Here’s one of those stories.
Quentin Tarantino had been a guest many times, often in the studio or on the telephone. His new film ‘Inglourious Bastards’ was about to be released so I was playing phone and email tag with his assistant trying to get a confirmation. I gave her my home number, asking that she let me know if Quentin was going to be able to call in the next day.
My wife, Sue, was out of town so I smoked a little weed and had a couple of shots of Patron to pass the night away. I fell asleep about 10 pm and was out like a rock. My alarm went off at 4am, as it always did in those days. While in the shower I had this strange recollection that someone called me during the night to confirm that Quentin was going to call in at 9am the next morning. The problem was I wasn’t sure if it was real or I had dreamt it?
Mark and Brian rolled into the studio and before the show started I told them I thought Quentin would be calling in for the interview but I wasn’t sure if it had been a dream. They found that to be pretty hysterical and for the next three hours promoted the fact that Quentin Tarantino might call in, but they weren’t sure because their producer was buzzed the night before and didn’t know if the call he received was real or a dream. It was a very funny shtick and I never minded being the brunt of a joke if it made the show better.
Nine o’clock comes around and the hotline rings. I pick it up and the caller says “Hey this Quentin calling in for Mark and Brian”. We’re on the air so I ask him to hold a few seconds so I can let Mark and Brian know he’s on the line. I walked into the studio pointed to the hotline and silently mouthed “Quentin.” They both start laughing as they say hi to Quentin. But before talking about the new film, they relate my story in a way only Mark and Brian can do. Quentin starts laughing and remarked, ‘Your producer had a good night.’
Like I said, Mark and Brian always knew how to make something out of nothing.
